What Justice Looks Like | Guest Speaker: Tracy Monts (Sunday Series)

  • United Church 1316 3rd Avenue West Seattle, WA, 98119 United States (map)

Come explore the themes of Justice located within Scripture with us, and how we can put justice in action as a community.

We believe that our God is a God of justice (Isaiah 30.18). A God who requires that we, his church, his people, do justice (Micah 6.8), that we maintain justice (Hosea 12.6), that we fight for justice (Isaiah 1.17), that we be a people of justice (Deuteronomy 16.20). It must course through the veins of the church community, and roll on like a never ending river.

But what exactly is justice?

The theologian Paul Tillich once said, ‘Justice is power performing the work of love.’ or as Dr. Cornel West poetically declared, ‘Justice is what love looks like in public.’

Justice is love in action. Justice is putting hands and feet into action to change the systems and structures that seek to destroy the poor, the weak, the oppressed. “Justice,” as Bernice King (Dr. King’s daughter) said, “is love applied to systems, policies, and cultures.” Justice and love are inseparable.
